Kolavizhi Amman Temple is a Hindu Temple located at Gopathy Narayana Chetty Street opposite to Valiswarar temple and to the east of Mundakkanni Amman Temple. This is a 1000 years old temple. Kolavizhi Amman was the protective god when Mylapore was a big Village. Normally Amman’s are protectors of the territories. The poojas are conducted as per agama by the non-Brahmin Poojaris.




Legends
It is said that a British lost his vision after photographing the Fire Walk festival and regained his vision only after worshipping this Goddess.



The Temple
The temple and presiding deity Kolavizhi Amman is facing north. The presiding deity is Kolavizhi Amman otherwise called as Bhadrakali Amman, Ambika, Mayurapuri Grama Devatha. The deity in this temple is believed to be Suyambhu in form and she is known for her love and affection towards devotees.



In the sanctum Amman’s stucco statue is on the back-side wall and Abhishekam is done for the Urchavar. There are shrines of Sapthamadhas in a single panel, Vinayagar, Nagars in the Temple. There is well covered with Iron grills. Lot of lock are locked with the grill. This temple is attached to Kapaleeshwarar temple of Mylapore.



Festivals
Brahmotsavam or any functions preference is given first to Kolavizhi Amman and after that only to Kapali temple. In 63var processions also Kolavizhi Amman leads the other chariots. The important functions held in this temple are Pournami Pooja (the vegetables offered are hanged in the temple), Poochoridal, carrying Poochatti (carrying the fire pots), and Milk Abhishekam carrying in a procession.
Prayers
It was believed that Kolavizhi Amman will remove the hurdles like legal cases, etc., The devotees praise Kolavizhi Amman as the Guardian angel and protects from any danger including Natural disasters. It is believed that those who worship at this temple will be cured of all diseases and blessed with peace & prosperity
